ごいもんだい1 – Kanji Readings

In the Kanji Reading section of the exam, they will give you a sentence with a word underlined. You have to choose the hiragana reading for the whole word that is underlined. The word might be all kanji, or have kanji and okurigana (hiragana that goes after kanji, in verbs for example).

Be careful of the the double marks called tenten that make a sound voiced and different readings. This is where Anki practice and readthekanji.com or the N5 course on Memrise will be helpful.

There are 12 of these questions on the actual test.

You should try to answer these in 20 to 30 seconds or less each. That’s around a minute for this test or 6 minutes on the actual test.
